Driving home today, the sky looked like it was a blanket over the world, like somebody was making a strong suggestion that all of us ought to turn in and sleep it off - whatever your personal it is. I haven’t been following the weather very closely but somebody at work told me that this was the remnants of Hurricane Fay. So I had hoped for a storm, a serious one, but there has been barely any rain at all. I even came home last night to no running water at all. (There was a water main break down the street which took hours to fix.) Wendy and I spent the useful part of the evening on the floor of our apartment playing Scrabble. We have an old set that still contains the letter Q, and once we got tired of keeping score we just sat there putting together words that are no longer in the dictionary anymore. It makes me sad to think that kids no longer learn the word ‘quizzical’ or even ‘quixotic.’ I don’t think I’ve used either of them ever, but — they always made me smile, however slightly, when I thought of them.
